Our friends Marjolein and Alfred, who over-winter there, invited us to join them for a meal on their boat on the evening of our arrival. They then gave us a guided tour of Dordrecht over the next 2 days.
We concluded our stay with a pleasant meal in a Greek restaurant (I know - virtually unheard of for the crew of Cyclone!).
The photos below show what we saw:
Unusual stained glass window in the Grote Kerk. It celebrates Dordrecht's Guilds |
View of the railway bridge from the tower of the Grote Kerk - 1 euro to climb! |
The same bridge, now open |
View of the Nieuwe (new) Haven. Only about 500 years old! Cyclone's in there |
The houses are built on wooden stilts apparently. Hope they're better than our fence posts! |
One of the Grote Kerk's clock faces. They chime the hour on the half past too... |
Pram with a false bottom in the Museum 1940-1945 |
Exhibits outside the 1940-1945 Museum. Rolls Royce Merlin parts from a Lancaster bomber |
Straatman Dock monument in the Wolwevershaven |
Warehouse Stokholm |
Damiatebrug |
Enjoying a drink with Alfred overlooking the busiest canal junction in Holland... |
... according to Marjolein! (It's true. Over 150,000 ships per year pass this point) |
Groothoofdspoort |
Het Hof (1572). The Union of Dordrecht was signed here in 1575. In it, the States of Holland and Zeeland declared their collaboration in the revolt against the Spanish occupiers. |
Attractive old houses in Hofstraat |
City Hall - with some great lions... |
"He said what!!!" |
"I know. Never again..." |
Arend Maartenszhof (Almshouses) |
They're for old women. These 2 youngsters are NOT residents! |
Windmill "Kyck over Den Dyck". Used for crushing Barley for beer |
Villa Augustus. Formerly a water tower and now a hotel/restaurant |
Some crazy people... |
... swimming around Dordrecht! All for a good cause though (a cancer charity) |
Dessert in the Greek restaurant |
Waving goodbye to Marjolein and Alfred. Thanks guys! Great to see you |
The Engelenburgerbrug (try saying that on the VHF. I couldn't!) that provides access to the KDR&ZV marina in the Nieuwe Haven |
We left Dordrecht Thursday 17th August and, after a day of torrential rain, are now in Sint-Annaland. It's about 30 miles from here to Vlissingen (Flushing) where we'll rejoin the sea!
"It never rains in Holland" - Marjolein |
Thanks for reading!
